Introduction
The Rural and Urban Development Division (RUD) of the Ministry has evolved from the National Development Unit (NDU) which operated under the Prime Minister's Office for over a decade. In 1997, it became the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development (MURD) and since September 2003, the NDU operates as a division of the Ministry of Environment and National Development Unit.
Aims and Objectives
The main concerns of the National Development Unit is the identification and implementation of projects aimed at improving basic amenities, provision of social and recreational activities in Mauritius, particularly in deprived localities and the co-ordination of development projects at national level. This is achieved through a Development programme known as the National Development Programme covering the 20 Constituencies in Mauritius.
This comprehensive programme aims at bringing a sustained and well-balanced development throughout the country, to uplift the socio -economic conditions and quality life of the public.
