The Unit has overall responsibility for effective collection of Solid Wastes from public areas and public beaches and their environmentally-safe disposal at designated sites. At present, refuse collection is carried out by the Local Authorities in the areas under their respective jurisdiction and disposed of at transfer stations and disposal sites managed and maintained by the Government through private contractors. In some specific areas, e.g. traffic centres in rural areas, housing estates, a few villages and on public beaches, the cleaning and maintenance function is undertaken by the Government along with the disposal of wastes.
