There are 23 Community Health Centres and 4 Area Health Centres within its catchments area

Historical background

Confronted with a high demand for a hospital from the population in the northern region, the government mandated in October 1962 a British firm to submit a detailed plan for such an institution.

In October 1963 the foundation stone was laid by Her Excellency Lady Rennie and it was decided that the hospital would be constructed in two phases.
In June 1966, the contract for the first phase was signed and it was completed in October 1968.

An operational Committee was set up in 1969 and it was decided to name it after the then Prime Minister.

The opening ceremony was held in August 1969 and Dr J.C. Mohith was appointed as its first Medical Superintendent as from December 1969.
