Objects of the Board

v To promote and stimulate the development, improvement and expansion of the construction of the construction industry.
v

To advise and make recommendations to the Minister on matters affecting or connected with the construction industry.

v To promote, stimulate and undertake research into matters relating to the construction industry.
v To promote, stimulate and assist in the export of services relating to the construction industry.
v

To provide consultancy and advisory services with respect to the construction industry.

v

To promote and stimulate quality assurance in the construction industry.

v To advise and make recommendations on the establishment of construction standards.
v To develop standard forms of Construction Agreements and Contracts.
v To encourage the standardisation and improvement of construction techniques and materials.
v To initiate and maintain a construction industry information system.
v To advise on training programmes.

Powers of the Board

v Accredit and register consultants and contractors operating in the construction industry.
v Cancel, suspend or reinstate the registration of any registered consultant or contractor.
v Accredit and certify skilled construction workers and construction site supervisors.

A new Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Bill, which would inter alia promote the development, improvement and expansion of the construction industry and encourage the advancement of skills and expertise of persons connected with the construction industry, is being worked out by the Ministry.  It is expected that the new CIDB Act will become effective during the course of 2007 following which the objectives and policies mentioned below are expected to be undertaken:

(i)

the introduction of a Mauritian Standard Conditions of Contract to enable the adoption of a common contract form in Mauritius;

(ii)

the carrying out of studies which will help define and develop strategies to boost the construction industry; and

(iii)

in line with the aim of the Government to make Mauritius a regional hub for professional engineering, architecture and quantity surveying services, CIDB is going to develop strategies to promote the export of services of the construction industry in the region.
