You are here National Transport Corporation | The National Transport Corporation (NTC) has been set up in the early 1980s to operate public transport services in the island. From modest beginning, after taking over the assets of ex-Vacoas Transport Co. Ltd, NTC has grown into a major transport institution. |  | CREATION The National Transport Corporation, a parastatal body, was created by Act of Parliament on 24 April 1979. It started operations on 12 March 1980. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the Corporation shall be to establish and operate public transport services and any other ancillary service in any part of Mauritius. ACHIEVEMENTS The National Transport Corporation has during these past twenty-two years grown into the single largest Bus Fleet Operator of the island. FLEET: 500 Buses BUS ROUTES: 65 (carrying some 210,00 Passengers daily) DEPOTS: Bonne Terre, Vacoas, (Head Office) Remy Ollier, Vacoas Forest Side Souillac Pointe aux Sables Rivière du Rempart MAN POWER: 2,800 Employees GOVT. SHARE CAPITAL: Rs 50 Million FIXED ASSETS VALUE: Rs 450 Million (at cost) ANNUAL TURNOVER: RS 550 Million NEW BUSES The Corporation recently purchased 58 Buses - 25 buses on the local market through self financed funds (Rs 30M) and 33 Buses under Indian Line of Credit (Rs 56M). Eco-friendly buses with EURO 1 Engines and Air Extractors have been introduced. 10 Air-conditioned and 5 City Buses will soon be delivered. NEW DEVELOPMENTS RETREAD PLANT: Commercialisation of Retread Plant - Tyres from private individual firms and parastatals being retreaded. ADVERTISING ON BUSES: New advertising concept on NTC Buses introduced. TRAINING: Ten young graduates following one year training at NTC. NEW ELECTRONIC TIM: New Electronic Ticketing Machines being introduced on trial basis. RETIREMENT SAVINGS SCHEME: A Retirement Scheme being introduced for NRB Employees as from July 2002. NEW DEPOT: New Depot to the tune of Rs 16 M is being constructed at Rivière du Rempart. NEW BUSES: NTC proposes to purchase another batch of sixty buses. LADY CONDUTORS: Innovative recruitment of thirteen lady conductors. CORPORATISATION With a view to further improve public transport, the Government has decided to corporatise the NTC. Such a set up would foster the adoption of modern management practices and would induce greater managerial accountability. Moreover, the Corporation will then operate along commercial lines with explicit profit objectives and hence be more responsive to competition and changes in the market. In the process, 5% of the stated capital of the new company will be allocated to workers thus ensuring more employee participation.
