The National Transport Corporation (NTC) has been set up in the early 1980s to operate public transport services in the island. From modest beginning, after taking over the assets of ex-Vacoas Transport Co. Ltd, NTC has grown into a major transport institution.

The National Transport Corporation, a parastatal body, was created by Act of Parliament on 24 April 1979. It started operations on 12 March 1980.

The objectives of the Corporation shall be to establish and operate public transport services and any other ancillary service in any part of Mauritius.

CORPORATISATION
With a view to further improve public transport, the Government has decided to corporatise the NTC. Such a set up would foster the adoption of modern management practices and would induce greater managerial accountability. Moreover, the Corporation will then operate along commercial lines with explicit profit objectives and hence be more responsive to competition and changes in the market. In the process, 5% of the stated capital of the new company will be allocated to workers thus ensuring more employee participation.
