 Local Health Commitees

Many people were used to decision being taken for them and to be being ignored in the community health development process. Community participation does not just happen.

The unit has revolutionized the concept of social mobilization and community participation. Form this perspective, it has set-up local health committees (LHC) across the island to sensitise the population and enlist their participation in the struggle against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Communicable Diseases (CDs). It has been a challenging task for the NCD Unit to set up local health committees (LHC) and make them fully operational. The members of the LHC are from different social strata of the community ranging from manual workers, head teachers, priest to bank managers and accountants. These committees are highly instrumental in the organisation and implementation of health programmes.
