In line with the recommendation of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the Passport and Immigration Office introduced the MRP (Machine Readable Passport) in September 1993. This system enables the automatic capture of data from a passport.

This has improved the quality of the service to the public as well as to increasing productivity.
