Respecting Port Louis “South” Division

Overview of Crime in Division

Port Louis being the Capital of Mauritius, is the nerve center of all Government Business and the private sectors to which are related all other business. The city center is mainly occupied by offices, banks and business with its residential areas in the outskirts. It has a population of around 175,000 inhabitants and welcomes an average of another 175,000 to 200,000 people daily either on transit, for business or for official duty and this last up to 1800 hours, after which the city is relatively calm and gets ready for its hectic night life.

The city also accommodates about 150,000 vehicles of all types daily. This situation gives rise to an acute problem of traffic fluidity during the day, moreover, this result into a major cause of certain specific crimes/misdemeanours such as larcenies. It has been observed that most of the larcenies occur during week days between 0900 hours to 1800 hours mainly in commercial areas. The nature of the offences are as follows:-

2004
2005
Larceny from Motor vehicles
12
20
Larceny of Cellular phones
192
208
Larceny of Moto/auto cycles
333
275

During Sundays, public holidays and after 1800 hours the above mentioned cases are low, if not inexistent.

As regard to other types of larcenies, they occur in houses, factories and in the industrial zones, mostly by inmates, neighbours and workers but are low in comparison to that of vehicles.

Overview of any new or emerging trend in the type and pattern of crime in the division

The same pattern as quoted above has been observed during the last years.

Current Policing Strategies

The provision of patrols has been catered to cover the whole division. However, very often there are unexpected events such as strikes, processions, illegal assemblies, and functions that necessitate the presence of more men power. Therefore, operational plan are made accordingly to police the area effectively.
