You must always swim in a swimming zone and only in shallow water if you are not a good swimmer.
Do not go to swim:-
| - when the sea is rough. |
| - when the tide is receding. |
| - after drinking or right after a meal. |
| - when you are tired as the body and its reflexes are retarded in such conditions. |
Don't swim near rocks or coral reefs and particularly avoid swimming at night as it may be difficult to notice those in distress.
Always remember not to leave your child playing on the beach alone.
Don't drift about by holding on to a floating object, which may overturn or carry you far away. Use a life jacket if in doubt.
Beware of the undertow. You may be carried out to sea unknowingly. If you find that you are caught in such a current, don't try to swim straight back to the shore. You will get tired out. The only way to come back safe is to swim in a slanting direction toward the coast.
Beware of sea urchins lurking in the corals when snorkeling. Their prickly shells can cause great pain when stepped on.
Never swim during cyclonic conditions. |
Never swim under influence of alcohol. |
Avoid swimming at unpatrolled areas as help may not be available in time. |
Always swim parallel to the coast and keep a lookout for other members of your group.
And last but not the least be careful not to go out too far from the coast. You may not have the stamina to swim back. It is safer to underestimate your swimming abilities than otherwise.
Remember prevention is better than cure and this is more important when safety of life is involved. Let us not allow any casual attitude on our part in appreciating the joys of nature thus turning it into fatality.
