Traffic Police Headquarter has the responsibilities for the:-

Issue and Control of Driving Licences, Domestic and International.

ISSUE OF DRIVING LICENCE

Eligibility (Age)

Autocycle : 15 yrs or above
Motocycle : 17 yrs or above
Motorcar  : 18 yrs or above

Heavy Motor Vehicle (Vehicles exceeding 8000 pounds gross weight): No licence shall be issued to a person to drive a heavy motor vehicle unless he has been the holder of a licence to drive motor cars for at least six (6) calendar months.

Applicant should be both physically and mentally fit to drive.

Prescribed Fees
Driving test                              - Rs 500
International Driving permit    - Rs 800
Duplicate (for lost/damaged)   - Rs 500

Note: -

(i) for a lost driving licence case must be reported to a Police Station where a memo (PF 77) will be issued and to be produced at the licensing office for the issue of a fresh licence.
(ii) The damaged driving licence must be produced to the Licensing Officer before the issue of a fresh one.
(iii) Applicant will be notified about the date a fresh licence will be issued to him.

Application can be made by two modes:

  • Application at nearest Police Station

Applications for the types of vehicles at (a) and (b)below can be made on the Prescribed Form available at the nearest Police Station of applicants’ locality.
Documents to be produced:

  • Birth Certificate,
  • National Identity Card
  • Marriage Certificate (for married women)

(a) For Auto/Motor Cycle & Motor Car

After processing of the application, applicant will be notified by way of registered letter to call in person at the Traffic Branch to take an appointment for the Audio Visual Test (refer to (c) below).
(Note: Minors to be accompanied by their responsible party)
(b) For Motor Car only

After processing of the application, applicant will be notified by way of registered letter to call in person at the Traffic Branch to complete formalities for the processing of a provisional driving licence. Applicant will then be informed as to the date of its issue.

(c) AUDIO VISUAL TEST (Oral Test)

  • For an application for a provisional driving licence to drive motor cars only, an applicant will be issued with the said licence for the purpose of driving as a learner driver under the conditions specified in law. However, before undergoing the practical driving test, he/she will have to mandatorily pass the Audio Visual Test against payment of the prescribed fee.
  • The Audio Visual Test on traffic signs is carried out on a computerised system. Candidates can opt for either English or French language. Candidates have to answer a set of forty multiple choice questions. Six wrong answers are permissible to secure a pass. The examination lasts for about forty minutes. On successful completion of the test on traffic signs, candidates may take an  appointment for a practical driving test against payment of the prescribed fee.
  • Application made online.
 

An application can also be made through the website of the E-Government Portal of the Government of Mauritius at http:\\www.gov.mu.  After application, the applicant will receive an automated reply on his given e-mail address with the necessary instructions.  Thereafter, the applicant has to call personally at the Online Application Centre at the Traffic Branch, Line Barracks, Port Louis within 14 days with the required documents for verification as well as the “Transaction ID” mentioned in the automated reply.

(Note: Minors to be accompanied by their responsible party who shall bring along his/her National Identity Card)

AUTHORISATION TO HOLDERS OF VALID FOREIGN LICENCE/INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT TO DRIVE IN MAURITIUS

Any person holding a valid International Driving Permit or Driving Licence issued by a competent foreign authority shall not be required to pass a test.

Any such permit or licence shall entitle the holder thereof to drive within the State of Mauritius any vehicle of the types specified thereon. Provided that, when such permit or licence is valid for more than three years at the time of the registration thereof in the State of Mauritius, such permit or licence shall only be valid in the State of Mauritius for a period of three years.

INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT

Mode Of Application And Requirements

Applicant  to call in person at the International Counter, Traffic Branch, Line Barracks, Port Louis between 0900 hrs to 1400 hrs on week days (except public holidays) and between 0900 hrs to 1030 hrs on Saturdays
Application to be made on the Prescribed Form obtainable thereat. Applicant to bring along: -

  • National Identity Card (original)
  • Valid local driving licence
  • Two recent passport size photographs
  • Fee of Rs 800

An International driving permit may be obtained after satisfying the requirements as described below. Such licence will normally be issued within 72 hours as from the time of application.

DRIVING LICENCE TEST

Oral Examination
  • Ability to read and understand Traffic Signs
  • Knowledge of rules of the road.
  • Traffic signals by Drivers and Police.
  • Mechanical knowledge.

PRACTICAL DRIVING LICENCE TEST

Competency to drive is assessed on:

Starting off.

Gears – Changing up and down.

Turning Right and Left hand corner.

Stopping at various speeds.

Giving of signals while driving.

Reversing to make:

  • a right-hand turn
  • a left-hand turn
  • to back the vehicle into an indicated position

Turning the vehicle round so as  to proceed in the opposite direction.

Stopping, holding and starting the vehicle on gradient.

Note: Applicants should arrange for their own vehicle to undergo the driving test and should also produce a valid Special Insurance Policy for that purpose.
