Traffic Police Headquarter has the responsibilities for the:-  | Issue and Control of Driving Licences, Domestic and International. |  | Maintenance of record of convictions of drivers for offences under the Road Traffic Act. | ISSUE AND CONTROL OF DRIVING LICENCE Provisional Driving Licences are issued free of charge.  | Eligibility – Minimum age of 18 years for Motor Cars, 17 years for Motorcycles and 15 years for Autocycles. |  | Applications should be made on Prescribed Form available at Police Station nearest to residence of applicants. Documents such as Birth Certificate, Identity Card where applicable, Marriage Certificate for married women and two recent passport size photographs should be deposited at the nearest Police Station along with the completed form. |  | Applicant should be physically fit. |  | Provisional Driving Licence may be issued subject to above requirements. In case of Motorcycles/Autocycles, applicants will be required to undergo in the first instance a test on local traffic signs. |  | Tests on local traffic signs are carried out on a computerised system. Candidates can opt for either English or French language. The examination is conducted in batches of twenty candidates who have to answer a set of forty multiple choice questions. Six errors are permissible to secure a pass – Seven errors and over amount to failure. Candidates have to fix appointments before hand. The examination lasts for about forty minutes. On successful completion of the test on local traffic signs, candidates have to seek further appointment for a practical driving test and Fee of Rs 500/- has to be paid. |  | In case of motor cars, provisional licence may be issued at the outset without passing the test on local traffic signs. Holders will, however, have to pass the test before undergoing practical driving test. |  | The Driving Licence is valid up to the age of 60 years, after which a Medical Certificate as to the medical fitness of the holder is mandatory. | AUTHORISATION TO FOREIGNERS TO DRIVE IN MAURITIUS Foreigners holding a Driving Licence by a Competent Authority in their respective countries may be authorised to drive during their stay in Mauritius upon fulfilling formalities at the Traffic Branch. Driving Licence held by such person issued by competent authorities needs to be produced. In case the person is above 60, a Medical Certificate as to his fitness is also required. No such conversion exists for Goods Vehicles and Heavy Motor Vehicles. Applicant must pass the test for such type of vehicles. INTERNATIONAL DRIVING LICENCE MODE OF APPLICATION AND REQUIREMENTS  | Application on Prescribed Form at International Section, Line Barracks, Port Louis. |  | Valid Domestic Licence. |  | Two recent passport photographs. |  | Passport and Air Tickets. |  | Fee of Rs 500/-. | PRACTICAL DRIVING LICENCE TEST Competency to drive is assessed on  | Starting off. |  | Gears – Changing up and down. |  | Turning Right and Left hand corner. |  | Stopping at various speeds. |  | Giving signals whilst driving. |  | Reverse. |  | Turning the vehicle round – to proceed in opposite direction. |  | Stopping, holding and starting the vehicle on gradient. |  | Ability to read traffic signs. |  | Rules of the road. |  | Traffic signals by Drivers and Police. |  | Mechanical knowledge. | Candidates should arrange for their own vehicle to undergo the test, as there is no provision for such facility by the Police. Candidate should also produce special Insurance Policy. MOBILE FIELD DIVISION Mobile patrol is performed on Motorcycles in each of the six Police Divisions. There is a pool of Riders who perform such patrol during day and night. They monitor traffic during peak hours, enforcing laws regarding Parking, Drunken Driving and Speed Limit. During week-ends, special Squads are set up to exercise stricter control on Drunken Driving at various regions of the island. |
