The Police Medical Unit (P.M.U) has the following function:-

  MEDICO- LEGAL (Pathology)
To carry out autopsies in all cases of unnatural death (suicide, homicide, and accidental deaths).
To carry out autopsies in cases of suspicious deaths, sudden unexpected deaths, deaths in custody or mental institutions.
Visiting scene of crimes.
Giving evidence in the various courts of law.
Carrying out exhumations whenever require.
   
  MEDICO-LEGAL (Clinical)
Examination of victims/ suspects in all cases of sexual offences (Rape, attempt upon chastity, sodomy, bestiality).
Examination of suspects in cases of voluntary homicides, serious bodily harm, arson, violent crimes, publicly disturbed individuals, sequestration.
Determination of age, sex etc in cases of tardy declaration of birth.

Evaluation of fitness of witnesses to attend court.
