| The Radiation Protection Authority (RPA) was established on 11 September 2006 upon proclamation of the Radiation Protection Act 2003. The RPA is a Government Department operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Energy & Public Utilities as an independent regulatory body to regulate, control and supervise all practices involving the use of ionising radiation. Functions of the Authority The main functions of the RPA are to:- | (i) | develop codes and standards for the safe conduct of all radiation practices; | | (ii) | license all practices involving the use of ionising radiation; | | (iii) | carry out inspections of radiation facilities for ensuring compliance with all the regulatory requirements; | | (iv) | provide advice and support in cases of radiological emergencies; | | (v) | ensure the proper management of all radioactive wastes being generated in the country; | | (vi) | provide training and to promote research and development in radiation protection; | | (vii) | fulfill the obligations of the State with regard to the conventions and treaties ratified in the field of atomic energy; | | (viii) | advise the Government on matters related to atomic energy and the safe use of ionising radiation. | |
