Radiation Protection Act 2003

The Radiation Protection Act (Act No. 46 of 2003) was proclaimed on the 11 September 2006. The Act makes provisions for the protection of the public, radiation workers and the environment from the harmful effects of ionising radiation, and also establishes the Radiation Protection Authority as the regulatory body to regulate all practices involving sources of ionising radiation.

Radiation Protection (Registration of Radiation Sources and Facilities) Regulations 2009  

The Radiation Protection (Registration of Radiation Sources and Facilities) Regulations 2009 came into force on Monday 16 November 2009.

In accordance with these regulations, all owners of sealed sources, radiation generators and radiation facilities should apply for the registration of their sources and facilities within 30 days of the date of acquisition of their sources or the date on which the facility becomes operational.

Regarding radiation facilities which would be already in operation before the coming into force of these regulations, their owners have till 15 February 2010 at latest to apply for the registration of their sources and facilities.
