The first Sports Medical Unit of the Ministry of Youth & Sports was opened at Vacoas Sports Complex on Friday 6 June, 1987.  The unit started to operate with basic medical and physiotherapy equipment and a staff consisting of a sports medical officer, a physiotherapist and a clerical officer.

The aims and objectives of the Sports Medical Unit is to safeguard the health of our sports people and to enhance their performance.  During year 2001, about 120 medical assistance were provided during competitions organised both by the Ministry and Sports Federations.

 An average of 400 sports persons attend the Sports Medical Unit monthly.

The Sports Medical Unit provides the following services:

   Medical consultation and management of acute and chronic sports injuries
      (Medication is issued free to sports people)

   Physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises.

   Medical assistance for national and international events whenever requested.

   First aid kit to sports training schools.

   Site work during training.

   Delivering lectures to sports people on sports medicine.

   Medical assistance for sports events under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth & 
      Sports.

   Fitness Assessment and follow up of sports persons.

   Anti-doping control.

   Nutrition consultation and advice.
