INTRODUCTION
The National Youth Council (NYC) is a body corporate under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. It has been established under the NYC Act 1998 to serve as a bridge between the government and the youth. It grants affiliation to National Youth Organisations and also functions as an advisory board to the Minister on the development and implementation of programmes to integrate youth in all sectors of national development.

To create a responsible youth citizenship imbued with multidisciplinary skills that would contribute efficiently and effectively in all spheres of the development of Mauritius.
Our Mission
To be an effective communication vehicle that would foster sustainable youth development through appropriate empowerment programmes, networking, good governance and advocacy.
What are the objectives of the Council?
The main objectives of the National Youth Council are:

To establish and maintain effective communication between government and youth organisations.

| (b) |
To ensure coordination of activities of youth organisations.
|
| (c) |
To assist in the implementation and evaluation of government policies in relation to youth needs,
|
| (d) |
To initiate youth development projects and activities with the aim of encouraging the active participation of young people in the process of their own empowerment. |
To attain its objectives the National Youth Council has to examine and evaluate the contribution of youth to the various sectors of development in the light of national needs and priorities and also study specific areas where the participation of youth should be invited or strengthened.
How does the NYC function?
The National Youth Council is administered by a board comprising of 9 members and has to:

Advise the minister on the development and implementation of programmes to integrate youth in all sectors of national development.

Grant affiliation to National Youth Organisations.

| (iii) |
Allocate grants to Regional Youth Councils. |

Who can become a member of the Council?
| 1 |
Any national youth organisation may apply to the council for affiliation.
|
| 2 |
Every national youth organisation shall on applying to become a member of the council submit a certified copy of its rules to the council.
|
| 3 |
Every national youth organisation shall within 21 days of any amendment made to its rules, submit a copy of the amendment to the council.
|
| 4 |
Every Regional Youth Council under the responsibility to the National Youth Council.
|
What is a Regional Youth Council?
| 1 |
There is a Regional Youth Council in every district of Mauritius including Rodrigues.
|
| 2 |
Every Regional Youth Council has to promote the objectives of the NYC and must organise activities with the collaboration of Youth Organisations in their respective districts.
|
| 3 |
Every Regional Youth Council has to establish a calendar of activites for the year in collaboration with the NYC. |
How is a Regional Youth Council executive committee constituted?
| 1 |
Every Regional Youth Council is managed and administered by an executive committee and is composed of 9 members aged between 14 to 29 years elected for a period of 2 years through a general assembly.

Every youth organisation affiliated to a Regional Youth Council has to nominate one representative to stand for election to the regional youth council executive committee.
|
| 3 |
The members related at the general assembly elect among themselves the Chairman, the Vice Chairman and the Secretary of the Regional Youth Council executive committee. |
Who can become a member of a Regional Youth Council?
| 1 |
Any Youth Organisation may apply for affiliation to a Regional Youth Council in its district.
|
| 2 |
Youth organisations having as principal objectives compatible with the aims and objectives of the Regional Youth Council. |
