 Mission Statement

To offer a wide range of welfare programme aimed at improving the quality of life of sugar workers , retired dock workers and their families.

 Objectives

To do all such things as appear requisite and advantageous for or in connection with the advancement and promotion of the welfare of workers and their children.

The Chief Executive of the Fund is the General Manager.

Main Activities

I Housing

   The Housing Scheme provides loan facilities of up to Rs 100,000 at 5%
   interest refundable over a period of 20  years to workers for the purpose
   of construction/repairs/completion of their houses. 


II Community Development

   The Community Development Division provides services of recreational,
    educational,cultural and social activities all over the island through its network
    of 121 Community Centres.


III 
Scholarship Schemes 

A. Secondary Education
     A number of scholarships are awarded yearly to children of workers who pass the CPE  exams held in the previous year to allow them to pursue secondary education. The Fund also grants 21 scholarships to children of sugar workers for the study of oriental languages at secondary level.

         As benefits, the scholars receive

          (i)  a monthly allowance as follows -
                  Rs 300 - Form I, II, III, IV or V
                  Rs 400 - Form VI; and

          (ii) an amount of Rs 2,000 for paying S.C. and/or H.S.C 
               examination   fees  for one sitting only for each examination.


B. 
University of Mauritius
   
           (i) Undergraduate
                 This scheme provides for the award of 25  
                  Scholarships to children of  workers who have 
                  been admitted to follow a  Degree/ Diploma/
                  Certificate Course tenable at the University of
                  Mauritius.

                  The University scholars are entitled to :-
                  (a) Refund of Examination, Registration & Library Fees; and
                  (b) a monthly allowance of Rs 1000.


             (ii)  Post Graduate
                5 Scholarships are awarded yearly to  of children  are who pursuing
       
        post- graduate (taught courses) at the University of Mauritius.

                The University scholars are entitled to :-
                (i) Refund of Registration, library and Examination Fees; and
                (ii) An allowance of Rs 60,000


C. Vocational Training
    Under this scheme, a monthly financial assistance of Rs 500 is
    provided to children of workers admitted to a recognised
    Government Vocational Training Centre. 


IV Amenities at Social Welfare/Community Centres

In the context of upgrading the quality of welfare services and improving the quality of life of the people, the Government is making annual provision under the Capital Item "Grant to SILWF for infrastructure, equipment and furniture for Social Welfare/Community Centers."

V Soft Loan Scheme

         (a) Amenities
              The above provides for an interest free loan of a maximum of
               Rs 10,000 to sugar workers for  the purchase of Gas and  
               Electric Oven, Refrigerator, Washing Machine, Sewing & 
               Embroidery  Machine and Autocycle.

           (b) Education
                The Fund also grants Soft Loan to sugar workers whose children are
                studying for S.C and H.S.C to meet expenses related to the purchase of
                books and payment of examination fees.


VI Cyclone Refugee Centres

      Following Government's decision to use Social 
      Welfare/Community Centres as Cyclone Refugee Centers, the
      Fund   undertook to consolidate these Centres and equip
      them  with basic amenities  with a view to make them suitable 
      to accommodate the refugees during cyclonic conditions.
