[Ilois Welfare Fund] Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity andSenior Citizen Welfare and Reform Institutions

Chagossian Welfare Fund 

1.  The Ilois Welfare Fund Act 1999 establishing the Ilois Welfare Fund was passed in the National 
     Assembly on 27 July 1999.  It was proclaimed on 1st   February 2000. In May 2011, the Act has been
     amended by replacing the word “Ilois” wherever it appears in the Act by the word “Chagossian” so
     as to make precise reference to the place of origin of people of the Chagossian community.

2.  The objectives of the Fund are as follows:-

(a)  to advance and promote the welfare of the members of the Chagossian  community and their 
      descendants in Mauritius;

(b)  to develop programmes and projects for the total integration of the members of the Chagossian 
      community and their descendants into the island of Mauritius;
(c)  to take over and manage the assets, and discharge the liabilities of the Trust Fund 
      which have been transferred to it under the Ilois Welfare Fund Act 1999, and to   
      manage and apply the immovable property and funds vested in it to further the social
      and economic welfare of members of the Chagossian community and their descendants in 
      Mauritius;and
(d)  to maintain and manage the Chagossian community centres of Pointe aux Sables and Tombeau 
      Bay and other community facilities vested in it for the benefit of the members of the Ilois  
      community and their descendants.
