The 12 POPs

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) targets an initial list of 12 POPs also known as the “dirty dozen”. The 12 chemicals, which are among the most toxic and lethal substances ever created, can lead to cancer, damage the central and peripheral nervous systems, and can cause other serious health problems. • The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) marks the start of an international effort to rid the world of POPs like PCBs, dioxins and furans, and nine highly dangerous pesticides. The Convention which entered into force in February 2004 aims to protect humans and the environment from the poisons. Mauritius signed the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in May 2001 and ratified it in July 2004. >>> Download:pdf format (138 kb)

• The Basel Convention

The Basel Convention was adopted on 22 March 1989 and aims to control the transboundary movement of hazardous waste. It also developed the criteria for “environmentally sound management” of chemicals. >>> Download


• The Rotterdam Convention for the Prior Informed Consent


The Rotterdam Convention, based on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure, prevents export of harmful pesticides and industrial chemicals, unless the importing country agrees to accept them. Its overall objective is to give importing countries the tools and information they need to identify potential hazards and exclude imports of chemicals that they cannot manage safely. >>> Download


• The Dangerous Chemicals Control Act

The Parliament of Mauritius has enacted the Dangerous Chemicals Control Act to provide for the prevention of damage to health and to the environment and to better protect workers, members of the public and the environment against dangerous chemicals. Part II of the Eighteen Schedule of the Dangerous Chemicals Control Act lists the banned or prohibited agricultural pesticides which include the POPs pesticides. >>> Download:pdf format (2 MB)
