    Ombudsperson for Children

The office of the Ombudsperson for children has  been set up following the enactment of the Ombudsperson for Children Act No. 41 of 2003. The Act was passed in the National Assembly on 21 October 2003, the President gave his assent on 10 November and the Act was proclaimed on 20 November 2003, the International Children's Day.

Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy Cziffra was appointed as the Ombudsperson for Children on 10 December 2003, Human Rights Day and she took the  oath before the President of the Republic on the next day.

The Ombudsperson for Children shall:

(a) ensure that the rights, needs and interests of children  are given full
     consideration by public bodies, private authorities, individuals and associations for
     individuals;

(b)
Promote the rights and best interests of children;

(c)
Promote compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
