It functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Women's Rights, Child Development and Family Welfare and Consumer Protection. | | The objectives of the Council are: | | | To establish and maintain effective communication with women and organizations of women. | | | To ensure coordination of groups of women and organizations. | | | To assist in the implementation and evaluation of Government policies as they relate to the needs of women. | | | At the request of the National Committee, to cooperate and if necessary affiliate with other bodies whether in Mauritius or outside having similar aims. | | | To identify and recommend to the National Committee actions and projects that will promote the integration of women in development. | Regional Committees 5 Regional Committees represent their respective Women Associations at the National Committee of the National Women’s Council. The Women's Association Unit | | | The Women’s Association Unit is responsible for advising and helping women to set up associations, disseminating information on policies and programmes of Government and for promoting the integration of women in development. Activities at the regional level are organized through this unit. | | | | Programmes and activities | | | Dissemination of information on women’s rights issues, | | | Organisation of activities, seminars, workshops, training and capacity building related health, including HIV/AIDS, nutrition, environment, economic empowerment, leisure and sports, media, domestic violence, etc. | | | Organisation of activities to commemorate national and international events eg. National Day Celebration, International Women’s Day, Family Day, World Health Day etc. |  | There are at present more than 1200 Women’s Associations which are affiliated members of the Council. The Adult Literacy Unit | | | The unit continues to provide for functional literacy around the island.
