Sulaiman al Mahri

 

Sulaiman al Mahri (1480-1550) was the disciple of Ibn Majid, the famous Omani navigator who helped Vasco da Gama in his first visit to India in 1498. Ibn Majid and Sulaiman al Mahri wrote the “Book of Useful Information on Principles of Navigation”. Sulaiman al Mahri was of Turkish origin and worked for the Ottoman Empire. He travelled extensively in the Indian Ocean and visited many islands including Mauritius. In 16 th century, Al Mahri’s texts were translated into Turkish and his works have become a reference in the history of navigation.
