Competition Policy in Mauritius

 
On the 20th of July 2010, the CCM hosted a full day “Workshop on Competition Policy in Mauritius” at the Sugar Beach Resort in Flic en Flac. The workshop was an excellent opportunity for the business community to engage with the CCM and gain clarity and insight into competition policy in Mauritius. About 110 participants, comprising of key members of the business, economic and legal community attended the workshop. The ceremony was officially opened by the Honourable Yatin Varma, Attorney-General. Mr Satiyajit Boolell, DPP gave a detailed explanation of the Competition Act, of which he was involved in the drafting and Rajiv Servansingh, Acting Chairman of the CCM spoke on the CCM’s work and achievements in the past 8 months.

The CCM was privileged to have Dr Frédéric Jenny, Judge at the Cour de Cassation and Chairman of the OECD Competition Committee, as the keynote speaker. Professor Jenny gave a thought provoking and highly relevant presentation focusing on competition regimes and cases in developing countries and smaller economies. The slides for his presentation are provided here. The keynote speech was followed in the afternoon by a lively panel debate, chaired by economist and chartered accountant, Pierre Dinan. During the panel discussion, Mr Sanjeev Ghurburrun, Barrister, presented on “Past Behaviour and Competition Liability” while Mr Raj Makoond, Director of the Joint Economic Council started a discussion on “The private sector and the Competition Commission.” The audience engaged energetically in the debate during the questions and answer sessions, resulting in some fruitful discussions on the operation of the Competition Act so far.
