The Internet has changed the world, specifically with regards to the breadth of information it contains and the unprecedented level of access that it offers. It’s hard for us to imagine the pre-Internet world, simply because the web has become such an integral part of our daily lives. Such large changes, however, affect each generation differently, with both benefits and consequences. For children, this truth is especially acute - the Internet can aid with their school work, help them connect with friends, and offer a creative outlet. At the same time, it can be hazardous to a level that leads to children in a state of shock and trauma.
The issue of safety of children online was identified as one of the areas of focus in the National Information Security Strategy (NISS) under the Internet Governance area of the National ICT Strategic Plan 2007-2011. In this context, the National Computer Board has developed a Child Safety Action Plan which was endorsed by the National Information Security Committee and the Cabinet. One of the recommendations of the Child Safety Action Plan is to create awareness on Internet safety at the level of the primary & secondary schools targeting parents, students and teachers. In this regard the National Computer Board has been organizing various events for Internet Safer Day 2009 and 2010.
Along the same lines, the National Computer Board/CERT-MU is organizing the above mentioned workshop on 22nd of June 2010 in collaboration with the Ministry of Education & Human Resources and Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands. The objective of this workshop is to address the concerns of the Internet risk at the level of the schools and the countermeasures which can be adopted by the children to use the Internet safely. The proposed workshop is targeted towards the rectors and managers of the state and private secondary schools. |
