According to researchers in Canada, the security system of Facebook has failed to stop a large-scale infiltration during which personal information about thousands of Facebook users were collected by computer-generated faked Facebook profiles, as stated on the website of nzherald.co.nz . 250 gigabytes of Facebook's user information including email addresses and phone numbers were collected by the researchers of University of British Columbia by using socialbots – ‘faked Facebook profiles created and controlled by computer code'. The socialbots together with user names, photos and computer-generated status updates sent friend requests to some 5000 Facebook users at random. When it was accepted, the socialbots then put out friend requests of the initial group. The researchers further stated that in eight weeks, they collected personal user information about Facebook users.
Regarding this issue, Facebook stated that they make use of three systems to combat these kinds of attacks and they are improving the effectiveness of their systems to address such type of new attacks.
