The officers of the Metropolitan Police Service e-crime Unit (PCeU) have arrested six people in connection with a phishing scam that targeted hundreds of students. They have been charged to have stolen over a million pounds. The Police discovered that a criminal network was targeting students through government loan schemes. The cybercriminals were sending emails whereby students were asked to update their details on their student loan account via a link. According to the Police, the suspects were able to gain unauthorised access to the victim's bank accounts and large amounts of money ranging from £ 1000 to £ 5000 at a time. After four months of investigation, six people have been arrested. As part of the operation, the PCeU has seized computers and related storage media from addresses in Manchester, London and Bolton.
