 Beware Phishing Email: Fake Microsoft Lottery Award  

 

An E-mail, appearing to originate from Microsoft, is being circulated with subject ‘MICROSOFT AWARD'. The attached word document (MICROSOFT LOTTERY AWARD.doc) which is suspected to be infected with malware, displays the results of the fake Microsoft Draw. An example of the email is shown below:

After downloading and opening the word document, users will find the following:

In this document, users will be notified that they have won the Microsoft Lottery Award and they will be requested to send their personal details including their name, postal address, mobile phone number, country and nationality by email. An example is shown in image 3.

There is a high possibility of the attachment being infected with malware which may crash applications and operating systems when downloaded and opened. If users reply to this email by providing their personal information, they may be further contacted for their bank account details. Therefore as a preventive measure, CERT-MU recommends users to be careful and strongly advises not to respond to this email or download the attachment.
