Total Integrity Management in Primary Schools: Paving the Way to Transparency and Accountability
The implementation of the recommendations of the “Total Integrity Management in Primary Schools” handbook launched by the ICAC at the Octave Wiehé Auditorium, Réduit on Tuesday the 20th July 2010, is expected to give a new sense of dynamism in the day-to-day management of primary schools. To ensure that this framework is sustained at school level, the ICAC plans to organize regional workshops aiming at empowering headmasters and school staff and make them better acquainted with the concept of Total Integrity Management.
About 350 primary schools Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers around the country attended a half-day seminar on the Total Integrity Management in Primary Schools organized by the ICAC in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources. The objective was to trigger reflection on the transparency, accountability, integrity and values education in primary schools in Mauritius and to enlist the cooperation of school staff to implement the framework.
At the seminar, Mr Jeerakhan, Assistant Director, of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources praised the collaboration of the Ministry and the ICAC and encouraged the audience to use the handbook and as this would provide them with a useful tool in their daily tasks in managing the school and help them to create a corrupt-free zone at school.
In her speech, Mrs R.Domah, Director of the CPED Division thanked the Ministry and its inspectors for their collaboration in making the handbook a reality. She reminded all those present of ICAC’s emphasis on the importance of education in preventing corruption. The school staff and the educators, she said, have an important role to play in this endeavour. In addition, she argued that “total integrity can become a way of life at school level. With a combination of good governance, staff integrity, and value-based education, the scenario is set for achieving this objective. It only requires a strong goodwill and a real sense of leadership to move ahead.”
In her presentation on the handbook, Mrs V.Vadamootoo, Assistant Director, CPED, added that integrity can only be promoted in an environment where values are upheld, where schools’ management policies, practices, rules and regulations are based on good governance principles.
A copy of the Handbook was distributed to all Headmasters and Deputy Head masters present.
