  Mr. Anil Kumar Ujoodha

Message of the DG:
“We have to be proactive in the enhancement of a culture of integrity”

Fortunately, our country has not yet reached the point of no return as far as  corruption and money laundering are concerned. However, since the perception of corruption in certain sectors is quite high together with the globalization process and innovation in communication, Mauritius is more and more vulnerable to acts of corruption that can compromise the economic and social reputation of our country.

We have no choice since we have a duty to resist the waves of corruption. We need a change in our mindset where integrity remains the only buzzword.  It is a fact that in countries where corruption reigns supreme, there is a total distortion of values. Such situation threatens democracy as well as human rights. In some countries, corruption has plagued the economy and brought poverty to unimaginable levels.

In Mauritius, we have to be proactive so that everybody, especially our younger generation learn and demonstrate the virtues of honesty, respect and integrity. This is achievable through the promotion of social values and sustained education among young people. This will, in effect, create an environment conducive to a culture of integrity –the antidote to corrupt behaviour.

To bring this societal change, everyone must contribute to develop such a culture of integrity.
This is a long term challenge and it will involve all the stakeholders including the civil society, NGOs, religious bodies, private and public sectors as well as the government.. To stem the tide of corruption, each and every sector needs the support of others. In short, there should be an inter-dependency where each sector brings in its capabilities. Fighting corruption in isolation may not achieve the expected results.

The ICAC is now embarking on new anti-corruption initiatives and measures that will not only enhance integrity but will also bring awareness that corruption is a high risk activity carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years penal servitude and for money laundering, the maximum penalty is 10 years penal servitude and forfeiture of assets plus a fine of Rs. 2 million.
We strongly advocate for a synergy of anti-corruption efforts for effective and visible changes in our society.

All Mauritians should join hands and work towards a unique goal: liberate the country from the pangs of corruption.
