Zero import of Carbon Tetrachloride in 2006

In the Implementation Committee to the Montreal Protocol, which one of the high level fora set up under the Protocol, Mauritius has officially been congratulated for Zero import of carbon tetrachloride in 2006, which is another Ozone Depleting Substance, which has to be banned in 2010 by developing countries.

This effort has been possible with the collaboration of all the stakeholders who have shifted to ozone friendly alternatives in 2005. Carbon tetrachloride was used as cleaning agents and solvent. We have thus again been enlisted to be in compliance with the obligations of the Montreal Protocol.

The implementation Committee has been established to act as a watchdog to review implementation of obligations under the protocol by all the countries and ensure that quantities of ODS import are being complied with as per set targets. Such a mechanism is missing under the Kyoto protocol to monitor emissions of green house gases by countries.
