9 July 2007 - Oral History and Traditions/Anthopology: Thanksgiving Activity
During the course of the Oral History and Traditions/Anthropology Research Project, the inhabitants of Le Morne Village shared their traditional recipes with members of the research team. At the end of the research, the Board of the Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund organized a thanksgiving activity for the participants, wherein some villagers prepared some traditional dishes and youths from the village entertained the audience by dancing the traditional Sega Dance.

The Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund organized a joint concert with the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture to mark the celebration of the Africa Day.

Nobel Prize Winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu accompanied by Honourable Mahendra Gowressoo, Minister of Arts and Culture, Bishop Ian Ernest, Ms. S. Anquetil Chairperson Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund, Ms. D. Bablee, Chairperson National Heritage Fund, Board Members of the Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund, and members of socio-cultural associations, visited the Le Morne Cultural Landscape, and paid their respects to the spirits of the slaves and the maroons who by their hard and unpaid labour, their sufferings, and their struggles contributed in laying the foundation of the Mauritian Republic. A special thought was also dedicated to human beings who experienced and continue to experience similar conditions around the World.

Slavery was officially abolished on 1 st February 1835. This year in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture and The Ministry of Arts and Culture, the Fund organized the Official Ceremony for the Commemoration of the 173rd Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery in Mauritius, held at Pointe Canons. An all nights concert in collaboration with the above two institutions, comprising of performances by local artists was also organized at Le Morne on the public beach.

The Prime Minister, Dr. The Honourable Navinchandra Ramgoolam and leader of the Labour Party, Sylvio Michel leader of the Les Verts Fraternels Party, together with the Ms. Stephanie Anquetil, Chairperson of the Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund, Ms. Diana Bablee, Chairperson of the National Heritage Fund and Dr. Vijaya Teelock, Chairperson of the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund paid their respects to the maroons who died on top of the mountain. Wreaths were laid at the top of the mountain, where according to sources, many maroons established on the Le Morne Brabant Mountain “Plateau”, perished during an ensuing confrontation with the maroon detachments that came to hunt them.
