Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation
Multi Carrier Mauritius Ltd was previously part of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation which was established as the Mauritius Broadcasting Service in 1944 with radio broadcasting as its first service. Television was launched on the 8 th Febuary 1965 using four transmitting stations (Malherbes, Jurancon, Fort George and Motte a Therese). The television network was considerably expanded with the launch of MBC2 in 1990 and MBC3 in 1996 with the addition of more transmitting stations to cover most of the populated regions of the country.
Multi Carrier ( Mauritius) Ltd
In 2002, Multi-Carrier Mauritius Ltd started its operations as a broadcast network operator, with exclusive right for terrestrial broadcasting in Mauritius. The first private radio station “Radio One” was launched, transmitting from three stations ( Signal Mountain, Malherbes and Jurancon) with the same coverage as the existing public radio channels.
On the 30 th September 2005, the first digital terrestrial multiplex was launched carrying a bouquet of six free-to-air channels. The coverage of digital television was expanded in April 2006 to reach near 100% population coverage. It is expected that analogue television services will continue to operate for some years before a complete switch over to digital broadcasting.
