Consumer Advice

Specifications for Set top boxes (STB)

Terrestrial front-end

Compliance

The terrestrial front end should fully comply with the DVB-T standards (EN 300 744)

Tuner

The STB should be able to receive all channels in the UHF bands IV and V ( Channels 21 to 69); frequency range: UHF (470 - 862MHz).

Demodulator

The STB should be able to demodulate a DVB-T signal in any combination of the following modes and detect which mode is being used.

COFDM carriers : 2k, 8k

Modulation : QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM

Code rate : 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8

Guard Interval : 1/4, 1/8, 1 /16, 1/32

Scanning function

The STB should include a frequency scanning function to detect the availability of DVB-T signals. It should also automatically list the content of the terrestrial bouquet by reading the PSI/SI streams

Quality reception thresholds

All STBs should have an on-screen visual signal level indicator which would aid in directing the antenna and troubleshooting reception problems.

Demultiplexer and decoder

Demultiplexer

The demultiplexer should be able to read a MPEG 2 transport stream

Video decoder

The video decoder should be fully DVB and MPEG 2 (ISO/IEC 13818-2) compliant.

Video resolutions supported: 720x576, 704x576, 544x576, 480x576, 352x576, 352x288

Audio decoder

The audio decoder should be fully DVB and MPEG 2 compliant (layer I & II) and should support the following modes: Mono, stereo and joint stereo. The STB should also be able to read multiple audio streams if present in the MPEG2 transport stream. Support for Dolby Surround ProLogic and Dolby digital outputs are optional

Input Interfaces

RF

Antenna RF connector: IEC 169-2 female, input impedance 75 ohms

Output Interfaces

Analogue audio interface

Two RCA (CINCH) female connectors for stereo sound output

Analogue video interface

One RCA (CINCH) female connector for video output

RF

RF by pass: IEC 169-2 male

Because many Mauritian households still have TV Sets with only an IEC RF connector as input, it is recommended that all set top boxes have a PAL-G modulator for outputting the TV signal onto the IEC bypass output

SCART interface (Optional)

The SCART (‘Peritel’) interface is optional for the STB. Set top boxes may also have an additional SCART interface for connecting to an auxillary device.

Conditional Access (Optional)

Smart card Reader

STB should optionally include at least one embedded smart card reader for use with conditional access applications.

Conditional access system

Conax CAS 7.0

DVB-CI slot (Optional)

The DVB-CI (Common Interface) slot allows any type of conditional access module to the plugged into the set top box. The DVB-CI slot enables new content providers to work with their choice of conditional access provider. However, it not being recommended as a standard item.
