Workshop: “Assessment in the Classroom”-

In the context of the implementation of the Strategy for Reforms in the Curriculum and in line with the policy of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources to promote formative assessment and introduce continuous assessment in the future, the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES) in collaboration with the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) is organizing a workshop on the theme “Assessment in the Classroom”.  The workshop will be held on 04 September 2007 at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre.  The papers presented will focus on key issues in assessment:

 

1.      Assessment in the Curriculum: Continuous Assessment and Assessment for Learning - Dr Newman Burdett, CIE.

2.      The Realities of Assessment in the Classroom: Case Studies in Primary Teaching - Jane Warrick, Faculty of Education, Cambridge.

3.      Using Technology to Support Assessment in the Classroom - Dr Matt Haigh, Cambridge Assessment Research Division.

4.      Using School Based Assessment to Assess Practical Skills - Dr Rick Nelms, CIE

 

In addition, there will be group discussions around the following topical questions:

1.   What do we assess and what do we record?

2.   Do we combine scores for summative assessment and how?

3.   How do teachers cope and what can we do to help?

 

There will be about 80 participants mainly from the Mauritian education sector with representatives from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources (MoE&HR), Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI), Mauritius College of the Air (MCA), Private Secondary School Association (PSSA), NCCRD, Teacher Unions and Senior Officers and Resource Persons from the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES).
