The Research and Syllabus Development Section provides the academic and technical support to other sections of the MES.

Research and studies are carried out with a view to improving

·          the validity and reliability of examinations

·          the mechanics of conducting examinations

·          syllabuses and teaching-learning strategies

·          assessment schemes, question papers and marking criteria

·          standards of performance and the award system like grading

The section provides critical support in local marking exercises and in preparing examination reports for appropriate feedback to teachers, learners, examiners and curriculum developers.  It carries out analyses of results for the CPE, SC and HSC examinations.  Briefing sessions and training workshops are regularly organised for inspectors, examiners and markers. The section provides academic support to the Ministry on various projects in the reforms of education such as Numeracy and Literacy, School Leaving Assessment at 16 years.  It also organises national and international conferences and seminars on examinations, assessments and learning standards.

Composition of the Staff

The Principal Research and Development Officer is the head of the section. Research and Development Officers conduct research and development work in examination, assessment and evaluation.  They are also responsible for the coordination of syllabus development and review for a range of subjects at the SC/O level and HSC/A level examinations. Research and Development Assistants and the Senior Data Processing Assistant provide assistance in data inputs, sampling and statistical analyses, analyses of results, scripts analysis and production of research reports and papers. The Administrative Officer is in charge of the work of the administrative staff which includes one Confidential Secretary, two Examinations Assistants, one Examinations Clerk and   one Clerk/Word Processing Operator.
