Assistance to Mauritians in Distress Abroad
(a) Air tickets
Mauritian nationals who encounter difficulties abroad may seek assistance from the Embassy. Some problems faced by our nationals are as follows:
• Shortage of money to return to Mauritius
• Arrest for illegal stay
• Victims of theft: loss of passports and purses
The Embassy liaises with the Ministry of Social Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade for financial assistance to cover the air tickets for the Mauritian in distress to return to Mauritius. Loans are granted to those in distress subject to conditions.
(b) Repatriation of mortal remains
Assistance is also extended to the relatives of Mauritian nationals who died in a foreign country. Families expressing the wish to have the remains of their dear ones repatriated for funeral rites and burial in Mauritius should obtain clearance from the Ministry of Health and Quality of life prior to the landing of the mortal remains. Missions will gather all the necessary documents, the most important being the death certificate whereby the cause of death is clearly specified. Upon receipt of these papers, the Ministry of Health and Quality of life will issue a no objection to the landing of the remains of the deceased person. A grant of €1000 is granted in connection with the repatriation of the remains by the National Solidarity Fund for expenses incurred thereto.
