The MRA organised a workshop on “Practical Emotional Intelligence for Leadership Development” targeting around 40 Directors, Section Heads and Team Leaders of all relevant departments. The training was delivered by one of South Africa’s leading coach and resource person, Dr (Mrs) Denise Bjorkman. The participants have had the opportunity of learning the Emotional Map, the distinction between Mood and Emotion and the various EQ Models and Competencies as well as the unique nature of public vs. Private Office. Among the other themes that were discussed: Personal credibility, EQ management in speech, Stress, Resilience & Change Management processes, Strategic Time Management, Coaching and Mentoring in EQ.

Following
amendments brought to the Excise Regulations 1994 by the
Excise (Amendment) Regulations 2008 and Regulations made by
the Minister under Sections 25(2)(d) and 57 of the Excise
Act, it is brought to the attention of
manufacturers/importers, wholesalers/retailers and the
general public that:
(i) The time limit to sell or otherwise transfer any existing stock of packets of cigarettes not affixed with excise stamps manufactured in or imported into Mauritius prior to 1st December 2008 will expire on 30 April 2009.
(ii) After 30 April 2009, any packet of cigarettes available for sale on the local market and not bearing an excise stamp shall, unless the contrary is proved, be presumed to have been manufactured in or imported into Mauritius, without payment of excise duty and taxes and shall be liable to seizure and forfeiture.
(iii) Failure to comply with the above regulations constitutes an offence for which severe penalties are provided.

In line with the policy of the MRA to continually educate the general public on various tax issues and keeping in mind the specific needs of secondary students, officers of the MRA delivered a one-hour training session at DOHA academy, Wooton. Some 600 students attended the courses delived in 2 sessions. The feedback from the students were excellent as the content was tailor made to their requirements. The MRA will continue to deliver such courses to relevant educational institutions with the objective of giving an overview of taxpayers' duties, rights and responsibilities.
The
MRA also offered a briefing session on PAYE to 15 employees
of the Mauritius Cargo Community Services (MACCS) at their
request.
