MRA - Facilitating Taxpayers in Filing Returns

On Friday 21st August 2009, the MRA launched the Electronic Filing of Returns Facilities for Individuals, during a press conference held at MRA headquarters, Ehram Court, Port Louis, Mauritius.


The Director General of the MRA, Mr. M. S. Lal filed his return electronically on the Internet Kiosk in only 2 minutes.

In line with MRA’s Strategy to become an environmentally friendly organization (paperless) and its commitment to the Maurice Ile Durable (MID) Project, E-Filing facilities for individuals filing Income Tax Returns (IT Form 1a & IT Form 1) have been launched by the Director General, MRA, Mr M. S. Lal in the presence of the Executive Director of the National Computer Board, Mr. Dan Faugoo. These facilities allow individual taxpayers to submit their returns electronically at their convenience and at the same time benefit from various advantages:

· Secure
· Paperless
· Instant Confirmation through E-mail
· No documents to be submitted
· No queues at MRA Counters
· Automatic – All calculations are done on the fly

MRA Lottery for E-Filers

To motivate taxpayers to file their returns electronically, the MRA has launched a lottery Scheme to give prizes to 16 winners who will be chosen under the supervision of the Gambling Regulatory Authority as follows:
1st winner – Rs 25 000
Next 5 winners – Rs 15 000 each
Next 10 winners – Rs 10 000 each
The draw will be held in the second week of October 2009.

This scheme has been set-up to increase the number of E-Filers. Along with this scheme, the Director General, MRA has announced that the E-Filers who has tax paid in excess will get a Fast refund within 7 days of the submission of the Return.

E-Corner: MRA Internet Koisk

      
The MRA has also catered for those who do not have access to Internet through the setting-up of a dedicated E-Corner. It is comprised of an Internet Kiosk which allows taxpayers to file their returns electronically and effect payment through Internet Banking. 5 Banks allow payment of Income Tax through Internet banking, namely: SBM, MCB, HSBC, SBI and MPCB.
