Keeping our Stakeholders close

“Ignorance of the law is no excuse”, everybody knows this maxim of law; but taxpayers usually experience a problem of interpreting and understanding the provisions of the law. To tell the truth, at grassroots level, MRA deeply believes that its human capital is its most important asset and treats them accordingly by offering them continuous assistance. When it comes to its stakeholders, MRA believes in their empowering by providing them with the appropriate tools and knowledge. During the month of May 2009, some 13 education seminars for private firms and educational institutions have been organized by the Taxpayer Education and Communication Department.

The Banking institutions concerned, the State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) and the Mauritius Commercial Bank, have attended briefing sessions on Value Added Tax (VAT), Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Corporate Tax delivered by officers of the MRA. Some 11 secondary schools have also received basic training in Tax issues. The objective of the MRA was to give, to the students, an insight of the way tax is collected in Mauritius, the sources of tax and an explanation of “where does the money collected by the MRA go?”. The feedback was excellent from the teachers and the students who have interacted by asking several questions about several taxes as well as the structure and functioning of the MRA.
