SADC 17th SCCC Meeting
Reinforcing regional cooperation

The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) had been requested by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to hold the 17th Sub-Committee on Customs Cooperation (SCCC) Meeting from 22 to 28 November 2008. SADC also organized during the same period, back to back, a Customs Union project Study Tour, the 3rd Steering Committee of the Customs Modernisation and Trade Facilitation Project and the 4th Customs Cooperation on International Liaison (CCIL). Around 50 delegates from different countries attended this event which was held at Le Victoria, Pointe aux Piments. The SADC delegates also visited several departments of the MRA namely the offices at IKS Building and Ehram Court and attended presentations by Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Mauritius Export Association.
Doing Business in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Customs and Trade Facilitation Reforms

On November 12th 2008, Mauritius hosted the launch of the SIDS Doing Business Report 2009. On
that occasion, the Director General of the MRA, Mr Sudhamo Lal participated
in a discussion forum on “Global Best Practices – Customs and Trade
Facilitation Reforms” at Le Maritim Hotel. This discussion was within the
context of the “Trading Across Borders” item of the Doing Business Report.
The MRA also welcomed a delegation comprising of participants of the SIDS
meeting and the Doing Business Report 2009 team on November 13th 2008.

Internal Launch of Corporate Plan
The 2008-10 Corporate Plan of the MRA was launched by the Director General
on 11 November 2008 in the presence of members of the Management Team. The
Plan basically lays down the strategic foundation for the MRA to make
further progress. It also provides our stakeholders with a clear
communication of its intentions and activities that it will pursue to reach
its objectives.

Launching of a Training Manual & Opening of Training programme for 60 Customs Recruits

The Training
Manual on Income Tax Law & Practice, prepared by Mr Mario Hannelas, Director
Medium and Small Taxpayers Department (MSTD) of the MRA was launched on the
5th of November 2008. The launching coincided with the opening of
a training programme for 60 new recruits for the post of Customs officer 1.
