Annual Return 2008
MRA: Living up to taxpayer's trust

In pursuit of becoming a world-class revenue authority, the MRA has spared no effort to better serve the taxpayers for this year’s annual return exercise. The communication campaign had been designed to cover radio, television, newspaper and the website of the authority. Officers have been offering assistance to the public for electronic and manual filing of returns through 14 FITA (Free Income Tax Assistance) Centres around Mauritius. Cash offices were also available in 6 regions throughout the island whereas for the first time individual taxpayers were able to pay their taxes online through the internet banking service of their respective banks (SBM, MCB and IOIB).
According to figures available at the MRA, around 100 000 Income Tax Returns have been received as at 30 September 2008. These figures include company and individual returns. What is more interesting to point out is the fact that the amount of returns filed electronically by individuals has increased six fold, from 1 571 in 2007 to 9 779 as at 30 September 2008. This brings the total amount of Income Tax Returns sent electronically by individuals and companies for 2008 to 11 320; compared to 2 339 in 2007.
In
addition to the service of E-Filing for Individuals receiving emoluments and
interests, the MRA has made available, for the first time, the payment of
Income Tax for Individuals through internet banking. Around 1 500 people
availed themselves of this service. It was also for the first time
that E-filing services were made available in the FITA centres.

Through these new measures, the MRA wants to spur voluntary compliance while ensuring an effective and quality service to taxpayers. This is in line with MRA’s vision to “continually reform and modernize tax administration in order to manage and operate an effective and efficient revenue raising organization comprising of highly motivated and skilled staff”.
