FOREWORD The
Central Statistics Office conducted a Housing and Population Census
in year 2000. Census
2000 was the seventeenth for the Island of Mauritius and the seventh
for the Island of Rodrigues. A
series of table reports covering housing and living conditions, demographic
and fertility characteristics, economic characteristics, educational
characteristics, household characteristics, geographical and migration
characteristics, and disability was published during the following year.
Analysis and evaluation of the census data are currently being carried
out and the results published in a series of analytical reports. This
present report is the fourth of the series and covers Population Distribution
and Migration. Where necessary figures have been rounded off to the
nearest digit, and hence in some tables, there may be slight discrepancies
between the sum of the constituent items and the total. It
is hoped that the report will be useful to the public in general and
to policy makers, planners and researchers in particular. I would like here to thank all staff who contributed in one way or another in the preparation of this report.
