Foreword
This year Mauritius took its seventeenth Census. The 2000 Housing and Population Census was taken in two rounds like the last three Censuses conducted in 1972, 1983 and 1990. The Housing Census was conducted from February to April while the Population Census was taken in July. The data processing for the Housing Census has been completed. The Population Census data are currently being edited, coded and keyed in for computer processing. The operations are expected to be completed during the half of 2001. The longer delay is due to the larger volume and greater complexity of the population data as compared to the housing data.
This report is the first in the series showing the results of the 2000 Housing and Population Census. It presents data on the Housing and Living Conditions in the Republic of Mauritius in tabular form. An analysis of these data will be carried out later and published in due course . It is hoped that the present report will be particularly useful to administrators, planners and policy makers and the public in general.
As for the 1990 Census, the 2000 Census data are being published down to the level of Municipal Wards or Village Councils Areas . Sub totals are provided for geographical districts as well as urban and rural areas within districts. For the first time , data for the island of Agalega is included. All tables include separate totals for the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues and Agalega and a grand totals for the Republic of Mauritius.
It
is with great pleasure that I put on record here my gratitude to all persons and
organisations who have contributed in one way or another to the success of this

for their co-operation, the census fieldstaff, the Mauritius Broadcasting
Corporation, the Government Printer, the Central Information Systems Division
and my own staff.
