Various seminars and conferences are organized during the year to sensitize different segments of the population on ICT.
Conferences that had been organized on the following during the year 2003:
Opportunities presented by ICT For SME's
The NCB organised a half-day workshop on 17 September 2003 at Le St Georges Hotel to apprise Small and Medium Enterprises ( SMEs) from the non-ICT sector on opportunities offered by ICT to increase management efficiency and boost up productivity in business. 50 SMEs attended the workshop.
Open Source Software
A one-day workshop was organised on 07 th August 2003 at Le Labourdonnais Waterfront hotel with the objective to create awareness on the concept of Open Source Software (OSS) and its evolution, and to share local expertise on the application of OSS in Mauritius
Cybercrime
The National Computer Board organised a one-day workshop on cyber crimes on 29 September 2003 at Le Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel. The conference targeted decision makers, information security staff, auditors, accountants, IT professionals and students and aimed at creating awareness on:
1. Different types of Cybercrimes and their international dimension;
2. Provisions in the legal framework to combat Cybercrimes; and
3. Security challenges facing businesses.
About 100 people attended the workshop.
Sensitisation campaign on entrepreneurship development
The NCB and the University of Mauritius organised a campaign in April 2003 to sensitise students on core issues of business creation in the ICT sector. Topics covered included entrepreneurship development in the ICT sector, the incubation centre and incentives and facilities offered by various institutions including the Board of Investment and Development Bank of Mauritius . More than 100 students attended the session.
Course on entrepreneurship development in the ICT Sector
Further to the positive response of the sensitisation campaign on entrepreneurship development in April, a short course on Entrepreneurship Development in the ICT sector was proposed to university students from 14 June to 19 June 2003, encompassing topics on the preparation of b usiness, marketing, operations, financial and human resource plans, road map for setting up a business in the field of ICT, legal implications, marketing for entrepreneurs, managing people, negotiation skills, and accounting and book keeping. The courses included local case studies and presentations by start-ups of the NCB Incubator Centre and local institutions such as the Board of Investment and the Development Bank of Mauritius . 112 students attended the course.
