APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR OF LICENSING

The Financial Services Commission is pleased to announce the appointment of Jarl Symreng as Director of Licensing.  Mr Symreng is the former Head of the Insurance & Mutual Funds Division and a member of the management board of Sweden’s integrated Financial Supervisory Authority, (the Finansinspektionen).

Mr Symreng is of Swedish origin and holds a Master of Law degree from the University of Lund, Sweden.  He has had a long and fruitful career in various positions in the Swedish Courts of Justice and in other areas of financial regulation including service as Legal Counsel to the Swedish Ministry of Finance, where he was involved in legislation on banking, insurance and securities.  Mr Symreng has been responsible for supervision in each of these three sectors.

Internationally, Mr Symreng has served as Chairman of the Technical Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and Chairman of the Joint Forum, (set up by the Financial Stability Forum and comprising the IAIS, the International Organisation for Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision).

At the FSC, Mr Symreng's role will be to direct and manage the Licensing Directorate.  This will involve not only the establishment of licensing policies and the processing of applications but also the development and structuring of the Directorate.

In the mid eighties, Sweden was amongst the first countries to adopt an integrated approach to supervision.  The FSC believes that Mr Symreng’s experience will contribute considerably to the development of the FSC and to further enhancing its work and profile.
