Pre-primary Education

The Council runs infant schools in the following localities:

Admission to the schools is granted to children having already reached their 3rd birthday and who reside in the locality where the school is found. Pre-primary education is free of charge.

All requests for the use of Municipal sports infrastructures should be made at the Welfare Department, 2nd floor, Town Hall Building , Vacoas

Community Centres

Home economics, embroidery, sewing & cutting courses are offered at the Municipal Community Centres found at:

  2. Carreau Laliane                         vi          Grannum
  3. Palmerston, Phoenix                 vii         Clairfonds
  4. Belle Terre                                viii        15 Cantons

The above community centres are also put at the disposal of the inhabitants of the town to hold meetings, exhibitions and other social and cultural activities.

Cultural and Social Activities

Several activities are organised throughout the year, more particularly to mark special events, to celebrate national festivals, Independence day, the Civic Week, etc. Such activities as sports tournaments, essay, quiz and elocution competitions, cultural shows and musical performances, seminars, talks, etc are also organised.

From time to time, activities such as outings and indoor games tournament are organised for the senior citizens of the town.

The Council on special occasion also provides assistance to the clubs and associations of the town to organise sports and cultural activities.

The Maison de Loisir found at the Town Hall Building is put at the disposal of clubs/associations of the town for the organisation of seminars, talks and similar activities.

The Council offers part-time courses in embroidery and short hand at the Town Hall.

Football Playgrounds

The Council has under its responsibility a football playground in the following localities:

  1. Solferino                                   6. St. Paul
  2. Closel                                       7. La Marie
  3. Reunion                                    8. 15 Cantons
  4. Belle Terre
  5. La Caverne

Youths of the town wishing to play football even after the sunset can do so as the football playgrounds are equipped with lighting system.

Petanque Courts

Following requests from the inhabitants of the town, the Council has provided Petanque Courts at Solferino, La Caverne and in the municipal yard at St Paul Avenue, Hollyrood, Cité 50, Hermitage, 5 Arpents, Allée Brillant , Camp Fouquereaux, Edgar Quirin and Ave. Syed Hossen

Petanque tournaments are regularly organised to promote this sport activity.

Gymnasiums

The Council has also provided well equipped gymnasiums in the following localities:

  3. Solferino                                               10.       Clairfonds
  4. Camp Fouquereaux                               11.       Grannum
  5. Hermitage                                             12.       Palmerston
  6. Mesnil

The gymnasiums are put at the disposal of the citizens from Monday to Friday between 2.00 p.m. to 7.45 p.m. A roster has been established to also allow women to avail themselves of the facility on certain days of the week.

The Council has also set up a kick boxing, athletic, badminton and a handball school for the youths of the town. Any person interested in the above activities may contact the Welfare Department.

Multi-Sports Complex at Palmerston, Phoenix

The Council has recently built the above complex which caters for the following sports facilities:

  1. Badminton
  2. Volleyball
  3. Basketball
  4. Squash
  5. Gymnasium
The complex is put at the disposal of inhabitants, clubs and students of secondary schools of the town, free of charge, on a roster basis. Being the unique multi-sports complex with the said facilities, it has already got an over-loaded schedule; but youths of the town who wish to use the facilities may still inquire at the Welfare Department as to its availability.
