The locality of Vacoas-Phoenix acceded to the status of Town in 1963 and has ever since known major developments in the social and economic fields. The Municipal Council covers an area of about 60 sq kilometres and the population is about 110,000.
The geographic position of the town has induced major firms and commercial enterprises, government institutions and other para-statal bodies to settle in the region. The town is easily accessible through the motorway linking the different parts of the island including SSR International Airport and Port Louis, the capital city.
There are Industrial Zones where some of the island’s main industries operate. Some of these are:

3. Food and Allied Industries Ltd.

To-day inspite of its industrial and commercial development, Vacoas-Phoenix can still be considered a ‘garden town’ given that it is the traditional supplier of vegetables and flowers.
The President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and other important personalities are the residents of the town.

There are 16 Primary schools and 11 secondary schools within the township of Vacoas-Phoenix.
The Town of Vacoas-Phoenix is twinned with the “Communes de Ste. Suzanne” of Reunion Island, the town of Antsirabé in Madagascar, and the City of Pune in India.
