Mission To provide quality and value added training adapted to the needs of the Mauritius maritime industry and the region as per international standards.
Vision
To be a national and regional training centre for seafarers, port workers and other personnel employed in the shipping and related shipping sectors.
Setting up of a Maritime Training Institute
The idea of setting-up a Sea Training School was born in 1970. In this connection, the assistance of the Danish Government was obtained. Among the various buildings visited by a Consultant, Mr T. Abd-el-Dayem, the building occupied by the Naval Voluntary forces during the British rule at 7, Guy Rozemont Square, Port Louis was found to be the most suitable.
The school was established initially to provide pre-sea training at sea to young school leavers who intended to make a career at sea. Eventually the school provided training to all categories of ratings in order to constitute a pool of seamen for employment locally and in foreign shipping companies.
As the building reached an advance stage of deterioration and was no longer adapted for responding to the needs of a fast developing Maritime Sector, a decision was taken to construct a modern training institute.
In 2003, Government approval was obtained for the construction of a modern and functional building with sea frontage, in two phases at Royal Road, Pointe Aux Sables. The foundation stone was laid by Hon. Minister A. K. Bachoo who was responsible for shipping. The project was completed in 2006 at the cost of Rs 60m.
In December 2006, the ex-Sea Training School moved to its new location. In May 2007 Government gave its approval to the renaming of the school as the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy. The Training Academy was inaugurated on 19 October 2007 by Hon. T.R. Baalu, the Indian Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways of India in presence of the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister R. Beebejaun, Hon. M. Dulloo, Hon. J. B. David, Hon. V. K. Bunwaree, Hon. Dr A. Kasenally, Hon. A. Dulull and Hon. S. Tang Hin Wah, members of the Diplomatics Corps and other eminent personalities.
The building housing the Academy is located on a plot of land of 2125 sq metres with sea frontage . It is a one storeyed building designed by the Architect Sector of the Public Infrastructure Division of the Ministry. The ground floor comprises interalia a customer counter with a waiting area, two workshops, two classrooms, one drafting room, a canteen and a conference room. The first floor comprises an administrative block, a library, two classrooms and a theatre of 168 seating capacity.
The second phase of the project will consist of the construction of a jetty for use by trainees, which is yet to be implemented.
Ever since this institution has moved to its new location, it has been fully operational. It is expected to become a Regional Training Centre and to serve the training needs of the countries of the region in a proper environment with all necessary amenities and equipment.
