Astronomy is a fascinating subject, capturing the imagination of human beings since time immemorial. One of the most powerful of many arguments for supporting astronomy is that it encourages our sense of wonder and thus astronomy is also an excellent vehicle for igniting an interest in science.
Several programmes are run to cultivate an appreciation and foster an understanding of the starry night among the people of Mauritius.
Planetarium Shows
The Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre uses an inflatable planetarium to initiate students and the public in general to the wonderful world of astronomy. Having a diameter of about four metres when fully inflated, it can accommodate 20 persons at a time. Inside the planetarium, a projector displays stars, planets, constellations and the moon. Presently, the show which is most appreciated by visitors is the Night Watch whereby the participants get a stimulating view of the night sky. The different constellations, their time of visibility as well as their positions in the night sky are pinpointed. At the end of the session, the many and varied questions regarding astronomy are answered.
Sky Observation
Sky observation programmes of the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre are held on a monthly basis (weather permitting) after sunset. The programme introduces enthusiasts to the wonders of the universe through a slide show followed by sky observation using the four telescopes of the Centre. Participants can gaze at celestial objects ( planets, star clusters, prominent stars, phases of the moon, craters of the moon, etc. ) and discover interesting facts about them. A software is also available to help participants locate the stars and constellations on display during the sky observation.
Special Sky Observation Programmes are also conducted during any celestial event, if any, during the year.
