Science Project Competition 2009

The Ministry of Industry, Science and Research has organized the Science Project Competition (SPC) 2009, an essay competition aimed at Lower Six students. This competition was launched on 30 March 2009 at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre with a view to creating awareness of the importance of Science and Technology for Industry. The SPC 2009 is now an annual feature of the Ministry of Industry, Science and Research.

The Grand Final was held on 25 February 2010 in the Auditorium of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka with the presentations taking place as from 09 00 hrs followed by the Prize Giving Ceremony at 13 00 hrs. Hon. D. Gokhool, Minister of Industry, Science & Research was the Chief Guest of this occasion in the presence of Dr. the Hon. V. K. Bunwaree, Minister of Education, Culture and Human Resources.

Science Project Competition 2009

The Ministry of Industry, Science and Research has organized the Science Project Competition (SPC) 2009, an essay competition aimed at Lower Six students. This competition was launched on 30 March 2009 at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre with a view to creating awareness of the importance of Science and Technology for Industry. The SPC 2009 would now be an annual feature of the Ministry of Industry, Science and Research with the following main objectives:

  • To promote understanding and appreciation of the importance of Science and Technology in today’s global economy;
  • To encourage students to research about scientific and technological innovation that have brought improvement to the quality of life of our people; and
  • To encourage students to explore and appraise scientific and technological issues related to the Mauritian industrial sector
The Competition

Students were allowed to participate in groups of three and a maximum of two teams were allowed to participate from each college. Each participating team was required to write a report on any one of the following themes below:

  • What has been the contribution of Science & Technology in the manufacturing sector in Mauritius in the last decade?
  • The contribution of ICT to the development of the manufacturing sector in Mauritius.
  • Through a case study of a manufacturing enterprise, assess the technology in the growth of the enterprise.
  • Why science and technology should be popularized in Mauritius and how?
  • Progress in engineering technologies has led to increased productivity and efficiency in our manufacturing industries. Discuss in relation to our textile and apparel sector
At the close of the deadline, 56 projects were received, all themes included, from 43 schools all over the island including Rodrigues.

Evaluation of Projects & Grand Final

A panel of assessors was constituted under the Chairmanship of Prof. M. Bhuruth to mark all the projects and select the ten best projects. The members of the Assessment Panel were: Dr. A. K. Maulloo, Mr. R. Auckbur, Associate Prof. H. Li Kam Wah, Dr. P. Pugo-Gunsam, Prof. K.M.S. Soyjaudah, Associate Prof. R. Somanah, Dr. A. Rumjaun, Mrs J. Cheeneebash and Mr. J. Chummun.

After assessment of the 56 projects, the ten best projects were retained for the Grand Final. A Jury Panel was constituted under the Chairmanship of Mr. P. Ah Chuen, to choose the three bests projects of the SPC 2009. Prof. R. Mohee, Dr. K. Oolun and Dr. K. S. Sukon formed part of the Jury Panel. As part of the evaluation of the best projects, finalists were required to give a Powerpoint presentation on their respective projects in front of the Jury Panel following which questions were asked by the Jury Panel.
