1981
Since 1981, the Code
Napoleon has undergone major changes.
Women are no longer considered minors
nor their husbands’ chattel.
1983
Amendment
of the Immigration and Deportation Act
(1983) to enable women husbands of Mauritian
women to grant citizenship rights to spouses
of foreign nationality.
1985
1985 sees
the setting up of the National Women’s Council
(NWC), an umbrella para-statal
organisation operating under the aegis of
the Ministry of (the then) Women’s Rights.
The NWC acts
as a platform that coordinates the activities
of women’s associations and their activities.
It also acts as an advocacy and lobby group
to promote women’s issues.
1987
The National
Pensions Act was amended in 1987 to enable
women over 60 to credit pension benefits
to their children and heirs.
